About The Seed Hoard
In December 2014, we started looking for our first seed donations. By April 2015 we were actively sharing seeds with local gardeners. In 2016 we supplied seeds to a local school to help start their school garden. In 2017 life threw us some curve balls, and we lost the seed library to flooding, but moved to a better location to install a permanent, continuous garden space where we can start to grow out some seeds, and provide food to people in need as well. We are currently looking for more seed donations for the next growing season. Your donation would be greatly appreciated.
Our goal is to make seeds available to every hungry family, every community garden, every school, every food kitchen, and every home gardener willing to donate what they grow to people who need it (the local food kitchen for example) in our area. I personally know several people who would love to grow their own food, but can't afford several dollars per packet of seeds from a store. When you have to choose between buying diapers or buying seeds, it's understandable that the immediate need comes first. I also know that many folks on government assistance would love to grow their own healthy food and get off the system.
We've found that store-bought packets often have far more seeds than an urban home gardener will actually use. This leads to two problems. The people who buy the packets end up with more seeds than they need; and due to the number of seeds per pack, the price of the seed packets is often higher than some low-income families can afford - particularly those who may need the seeds the most. The solution? We're hoping that people with extra seeds will donate them to our cause. We will then repackage them into smaller packages to be shared with people in need.
What's the catch you might ask? Simple! It's a pay-it-forward system. If you have extra seeds, donate them! It's better than letting them go to waste. If you are a local gardener and you have seeds and you'd like to donate, please bring them by and feel free to pick out some new ones while you're here! We're all about saving seeds and encouraging biodiversity. If you get seeds from our library, we ask that you donate seeds in return. If you can't afford or don't have seeds to trade, we ask that you save seeds from the plants you grow from the seeds you got from us. Save some for yourself, and donate some back to us so others can have the opportunity to grow that particular variety.
Because we are just one family, we are not 501(c)3 tax exempt, so your donation will not be a tax write-off. It will however, hopefully bring a smile to your face and a warmth to your heart to know that you've helped someone else.
Donated seeds will not be sold, but rather shared with local gardeners and hungry families (free of charge)..
